Custom Choice Cereal Review and Giveaway

I had the pleasure of trying out Custom Choice Cereal.

All I had to do is log onto their website, Custom Choice Cereal. It shows three steps on creating your cereal mix, very easy. To start with I clicked on "Start Mixing". (there is also the option on clicking on "Our Favorites Mixes").

Step 1. Select Your Base, "Choose Me". It gives three different choices for the base.

  • Cinnamon Granola

  • Organic Corn Flakes

  • Organic Good Morning Flakes

I chose the Cinnamon Granola. I love granola.

Step 2. Add Ingredients, "Choose Me". It gives you 12 different kinds of fruit to pick from. And off to the right hand side you will see choices for nuts and seeds.

  • Strawberries

  • Organic Wild Berries

  • Pears

  • Banana Chips

  • Cranberries

  • Organic Strawberries

  • Apricots

  • Goji Berries

  • Organic Raisins

  • Apples

  • Cherries

  • Pineapple

I chose the Strawberries, again one of my favorites. Click on "Next Please".

Step 3. Place Your Order. Then you get to name your cereal. I made it simple, I called mine "Strawberry Granola". Then You click on "Save Name". Then after that is your Shopping Cart and Check Out Page.

So you see it is really easy to order. In a few days I had my "Strawberry Granola" cereal. It comes in a 12 once bag. 6 Servings.

Now for the taste test. It tastes really good and yummy. A little more sugar than I would like for my taste, but it is very good. The cereal filled up my tummy and I was ready to go until lunch. I would say that the kids would love this cereal.

It was really fun being able to pick and choose what I wanted in my cereal. A very creative choice on Custom Choice Cereal's part. I think that the kids would enjoy helping mom pick out the cereal. And the excitement when it comes in the mail. Thumbs up to Custom Choice Cereal.

Tips for Eating at Restaurants

What you need to know when when dining out.

1. Deciding where to eat.

  • Check with gluten-free websites and blogs for a list of gluten-free Restaurants.

  • Call the Restaurant to make sure they have a gluten-free menu and ask them if they guard against cross-contamination.

  • Finer Dining Establishments are usually more aware of what gluten is and can be more helpful

2. Don't dine during peak hours, dine before or after the dinner rush.

3. Explain what you cannot eat briefly.

  • Example, Hi, I need your help please. I cannot have gluten in my meals. Gluten is in Wheat, Barely and Rye. Can you please explain to the chef I cannot have these.

  • Having the server understand your needs is essential, they will help the Chef know you are gluten-intolerant.

  • Also having a dining card explaining you cannot have gluten and having a medical bracelet will help in giving creditability to the seriousness of your condition.

4. Be sure and ask detailed questions.

  • Use your restaurant card that explains that you cannot have gluten and why, to be taken to the chef. The person who really knows what is in the dish is the person who is making it. You need to ask detailed questions about the food preparation. Below are some possible cross contamination issues.

  • Salads: Contamination lies in the cleanliness of the cutting boards used to chop the vegetables that goes in the salad. Ask for the salad dressing on the side. No croutons or other breads.

  • Salad Dressings and Marinades: They may contain thickeners that have gluten in it. Order a lemon wedge and oil on the side, wine or balsamic vinegar and oil. Or bring your own salad dressing with you from home.

  • Soups and Sauces: Soup bases are often used in for soups and sauces. Bases contain ingredients of flour and butter. Canned Sauces are also used. Ask to see the ingredient list to make sure there is no soup base. They may contain gluten.

  • Meats: ask to make sure the chef did not cook the meat in HVP or TVP. That is hydrolyzed vegetable protein or textured vegetable protein, that means, we don't know what is in them.

  • Fried Foods: The oil used to fry foods may be used for both breaded and non-breaded foods. They should be avoided. In large restaurants they used separate fryers. Ask the restaurant if they use a separate fryer.

  • Rice, Starches and Hash Browns: Ask what ingredients have been added to them. Ask for plain rice cooked in water, baked or steamed.

  • Dairy: Sometimes non-dairy products are used like, non dairy creamers, sour cream and whip topping. Ask to make sure the ingredients don't have gluten.

5. Ask to make sure they are using a clean cooking surface and clean utensils. Make sure no bread has been placed on it. Suggest they use foil to cook on if they are not.

6. Confirm that the meal that they are serving you is gluten-free. Did they follow your instructions?

7. Thank your waiter and leave a good tip. If you have any gluten-free information like a brochure or business card, leave that too.

These are tips for those who have Celiac Disease and gluten intolerance.

Here is a list of Gluten Free Restaurants that I have put together.

May is National Salad Month

Focus on Nutritional Health during May as National Salad Month.

Salads are important factor for optimal health. In 1992 National Salad Month was launched. It is used to shine a spotlight on the health benefits of eating different kinds of leafy greens and colorful vegetables.

Evidence of salad's health benefits can be found in a study conducted by University of California, Los Angeles and Louisiana State University. It was published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association. It said that people who eat salads, raw vegetables and salad dressing have higher levels of Vitamins C, E, B6 and Folic Acid. They are all important in promoting a healthy immune system.

Salad dressings are a good accompaniment to vegetables, fruits and on salads. Salad dressings provide essential fatty acid and alpha-linolenic acid that helps to prevent women against fatal heart attacks. As well as does Vitamin E which has enormous health benefits.

Less than half of America's population is getting enough of essential nutrients for optimal health. Research shows that eating just one salad a day can have an great impact on your health. So eating salad is allot more healthier than we thought. So eat your salad it is very good for you.

For more information visit, saladaday.org. Here is a video about National Salad Month.

Take care of your body and your body will take care of you.
Have a wonderful week.

5 Detoxification Types to Effectively Remove Toxins from the Body

To remove toxins from the body, here are five different types of detoxification: alcohol detoxification, drug detoxification, metabolic detoxification, alternative medicine, and diet detoxification.

Detoxification, detox for short, is a method of removing toxins or poison which create harmful effects in the body. The type of detoxification to be employed solely depends on the kind of toxins that need to be removed from one’s body. Here are the various detoxification types designed to get rid of different kinds of harmful chemicals:

Alcohol detoxification

This method is used to bring back a heavy drinker’s system to normal function. This is done by putting an abrupt stop of alcohol intake to an alcohol-dependent individual. Moreover, the alcohol is then replaced with drugs that are cross-tolerant to prevent any alcohol withdrawal effect. However, it is important to stress out that this is not intended to treat alcoholism at all. Moreover, the term alcohol detoxification is an inappropriate name, so to speak, because this process does not actually perform any removal of any toxic substance except it only helps in alcohol cessation.

Drug detoxification

This is utilized to alleviate withdrawal symptoms during the cessation of drug intake. It is also used to control drug intoxication of the addicted individual. Drug detoxification is done using these three steps:

  • Evaluation – primarily, the addicted patient undergoes a testing to figure out the kind of substances that are found in the bloodstream. This is necessary in order to establish the diagnosis, at the same time, to find out the behavioral issues of the patient.

  • Stabilization – in this stage, the patient is given thorough explanation of the detoxification, treatment and recovery process. Oftentimes, family and other individuals close to the patient are asked to be present during the stabilization as a way of showing support.

  • Guidance into Treatment – this is done by giving the patient proper guidance to the actual process of recovery. Since drug detoxification focuses mainly on the physical dependency issues, hence, it is in no way dealing with any of the physiological aspects pertaining to the addiction of drugs. This last step of detoxification is crucial because in order to fulfill the whole drug detoxification process, an agreement from the patient to undergo a drug rehabilitation program should be acquired.

Metabolic detoxification

Every living organism may have harmful substances known as xenobiotic. This is a chemical substance that shouldn't be found in an organism, yet, oftentimes can be found in it. It can be in the form of drugs or poison. In fact, antibiotics are one of the most common xenobiotic found in the body. It may be lessened or ultimately removed through a process called xenobiotic metabolism. This is a process involving the deactivation of xenobiotics and excreting these harmful substances through different routes such urine and sweat. Certain enzymes are essential in breaking down medications that have accumulated in the body.

Alternative medicine

Alternative medicine is an approach that claimed to remove toxins from the body through herbal and electrical treatments. Although, there is no scientific basis for this type of detoxification, it has already established several forms of therapy such as: contrast showers, body cleansing, water fasting, and many others.

Diet detoxification

Some diets have concluded that the accumulation of toxins in the body which are brought about by the intake of non-nutritious food, over-eating, and taking in of processed food should be removed through diet detoxification. Moreover, almost all detox diet invokes for increase in water intake. That is at least eight glasses of water per day.

Detoxification, particularly body cleansing and detox diets, have become prevalent nowadays. People of different walks of life have come to the point of searching for various ways to get rid of toxins in the body completely. There has been a wide array of cleansing and detox methods formulated and sold in the market. To mention one cleansing agent, there is the Zus health which is designed to remove toxins from the body too.

My favorite form of detoxification is using a castor oil pack. You put castor oil on a cotton flannel cloth, (lay down on the couch or on your bed), then lay the cotton cloth on your stomach, then a plastic bag, then a towel, lastly a heating pad. Do that for about an hour. It is really soothing. Do this 3 times a week if not more. This is from my post, How to eat healthy and gluten free.
