Steamed Vegetables

I like to alternate these vegetables in my steamer pot or you can use an electric food steamer. Steam for 20 minutes or until tender.

Quarter cut these vegetables.

2 Potatoes, yams or sweet potatoes

1 Acorn squash, spaghetti squash or butternut squash

1 Rutabaga or red beet

1 Cup Baby carrots

1 Cup Celery

1 Green pepper or red pepper

1 Cup Broccoli or cauliflower

1/2 Green Cabbage or red cabbage

Top off with some leafy greens, like collard, mustard greens or spinach.

You can also add 3 or 4 eggs to the bottom of the pot for poached eggs.

Place your choice of vegetables on a plate and add a little bit of butter and Bragg Liquid Aminos (or salt and pepper) for taste. And if you want add some shredded cheese. You can then serve with your choice of meat.

This is my very favorite way to eat vegetables, it tastes so good and it is very healthy.

Dermatitis Herpetitformis

Dermatitis Herpetitformis is a chronic disease of the skin marked by watery, itchy blisters that may resemble pimples or blisters. The ingestion of gluten (from wheat, rye and barley) triggers an immune system response that deposits a substance, IgA (Immunoglobulin A), under the top layer of the skin. IgA is present in affected as well as unaffected skin. Dermatitis Herpetitformis is a hereditary autoimmune gluten intolerance disease linked with celiac disease. If you have Dermatitis Herpetitformis you will always have gluten intolerance. With Dermatitis Herpetitformis, the primary lesion is on the skin, whereas with celiac disease the lesions are in the small intestine. The degree of damage to the small intestine is often less severe or more patchy than those with celiac disease. Both diseases are permanent and the symptoms and damage will occur after eating gluten.

The symptoms of dermatitis herpetitformis are:
  • Watery, itchy skin that resembles pimples or blisters
  • Itching and burning sensation
  • Scratching will irritate it more
  • May appear on pressure points, such as, elbows, knees, buttocks, face and scalp, but can appear anywhere.
  • Can effect men, women and children

The diagnosis of dermatitis herpetitformis is to have your dermatologist take a small biopsy of the unaffected skin. The presence of IgA deposits will confirm a diagnosis of Dermatitis Herpetitformis. Sometimes the dermatologist may also want you to do blood work for celiac disease and see a GI Doctor.

The treatment for dermatitis herpetitformis is to strictly follow a gluten free diet. It may take a two years or more on a gluten free diet for the IgA deposits under the skin to clear. Your doctor may prescribe medications for relief from the itching and burning, it requires close monitoring by your doctor (because of serious side effects). Medications should not be used during pregnancy. If you are using medications to relieve the itching make sure you are also following a gluten-free diet.

The questions you should ask your doctor are:
  • Should I be taking medications for this disease?
  • How long should I take this medicine?
  • What are the side effects of the medicine?
  • How often do I need to get my blood drawn?
  • What else can trigger Dermatitis Herpetitformis?

The Prognosis is excellent if you stay on the gluten free diet. The severity and frequency of the itching and burning will decrease as you continue on with the gluten free diet. Iodine is essential and should not be removed from your diet without your doctor's supervision.

The related disorders with Dermatitis Herpetitformis and Celiac Disease are:
  • Thyroid disease (most common)
  • Addison's disease
  • Autoimmune chronic active hepatitis
  • Alopecia Areata
  • Graves disease
  • Insulin-Dependant Diabetes mellitus (type 1)
  • Myasthenia gravis
  • Scleroderma
  • Sjogren's syndrome
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus
  • there may be other diseases associated
Thyroid disease and diabetes are the two most commonly associated diseases. You may have other skin conditions as well.

Pizza Stone Review from CSN Stores

I decided to do a review on this pizza stone, which is what I need for my gluten-free lifestyle. I love making gluten-free pizza.

Fox Run Craftsmen Square Pizza Stone
Features:
•pizza stone
•Ceramic construction
•Can be used for baking cookies and rolls
•Overall dimensions: 0.375" H x 16" W x 14" D

This pizza stone works great for already made pizza crust. When I made a pizza crust from a pizza crust mix it stuck, probably because it is a new pizza stone. Anyways the pizza turned out good and it tasted really good. We have used the pizza stone to bake other things as well and it turned out great. The pizza stone seems to get nicked easy. It has to be cleaned with just water and I use olive oil to cure it. All in all I give this pizza stone 3 stars out of 5.

I just love CSN Stores, they have lots of great products to pick from. Check out CSN Stores, you can click on their website for a full list of categories they carry. Happy Shopping.

Easy, Inexpensive Ways to Control Dust Allergies

With outdoor pollution and chemical contaminants rampant these days, creating an indoor environment that is free of dust and allergens is becoming more difficult for those who suffer from asthma, lung issues, or other breathing difficulties. To prevent allergic responses, such as a runny nose, sniffling, sneezing and chronic coughing, allergy sufferers should consider some of the following actions to reduce dust mites in their homes:

BECOME A CLEANING FREAK

Few people like to spend time cleaning, but there is no better preventative for keeping the symptoms of allergies under control. Establishing a routine cleaning schedule could save you several hours in the doctor’s office or an emergency room.

• Keep the house thoroughly vacuumed and have carpets and upholstery steamed annually.

• Consider covering all upholstered seating with furniture covers, which can easily be removed for frequent laundering to remove allergens that have collected on them.

• Keep ceiling fans, lights and fans and baseboards or trim dusted and deep clean them several times a year with hot, sudsy water.

• Empty all trash cans every day.

• Wash bathmats and towels as often as possible and linens at least once a week.

• Have a professional inspection and cleaning of heating and cooling ducts each year and keep filters clean.

• Use a vacuum to thoroughly clean dust from the box springs at least bi-annually.

MAKE IMPORTANT HOME ALTERATIONS

While major changes around the house are sometimes daunting because of the high costs and energy required, they can also be worth it in the long run. Over a few years time, the savings generated from not using as much allergy medication will help to pay for the changes that will improve the air quality of the home for everyone.

• If possible, remove all carpeting from your house. If this is impractical to do at one time, begin with areas where you sleep or spend the most time and replace the rugs and carpeting in a step-by-step plan.

• Caulk any cracks around windows and cabinets and make sure door seals are intact to prevent dust from entering the home from outside sources.

• Encase mattresses and pillows in plastic and wipe down often.

• Replace the children’s soft stuffed toys with those which can be easily cleaned.

• Begin using a vacuum cleaner with a filter made especially to reduce household allergens.

Allergies can be miserable and make adults and children more susceptible to even more serious health conditions. Because of this, it is important to do everything possible to control the dust, mold, and mildew that might contribute to severe reactions. If someone in your household is one of the fifty million people who constantly battles with indoor allergies, it may be time to take drastic action by investing more time in household cleaning and making changes in some of the household furnishings.

By-line:
Caroline is a writer who is passionate about healthy living. She also loves to find ways to save time and money when cleaning her home. She runs a website that sells washable sofa covers, which can help reduce dust in the home.

King Arthur Flour Review & Giveaway

This is a review and giveaway of The King Arthur Flour Gluten-Free mixes. I choose to review their Gluten-Free Bread Mix and their Gluten-Free Pancake Mix. King Arthur Flour is giving away to one lucky winner two boxes of their gluten-free mix.

King Arthur Flour is America’s oldest flour company, founded in 1790. They became an employee-owned company in 1996, when Frank Sands instated the employee stock ownership program (ESOP). They are now 100% employee-owned, and have always been 100% committed to quality. Their headquarters in Norwich, Vermont, is a 16,600-square-foot timber-frame structure called, appropriately, Camelot.

King Arthur Flour now carries gluten-free mix. Their gluten-free products are packed off site, at a dedicated gluten-free facility. This facility processes only gluten-free foods, and all personnel are carefully trained in practices and procedures that support gluten-free manufacturing of food products.

King Arthur Flour Gluten-Free Mixes are:
  • Gluten-Free
  • Soy-Free
  • Nut-Free
  • Tree Nut-Free
  • Fish-Free
  • Shell Fish-Free
  • Egg-Free
  • Dairy-Free
  • Free of Preservatives
  • Kosher
(Note: Their mixes may require eggs and/or dairy; please take a look at their packaging. I used rice milk when I made both of these mixes and you could use an egg replacer).

The Gluten-Free Flour Mix comes in a:
  • Gluten-Free Bread Mix
  • Gluten-Free Cake Mix
  • Gluten-Free Brownie Mix
  • Gluten-Free Cookie Mix
  • Gluten-Free Pizza Crust Mix
  • Gluten-Free Pancake Mix
  • Gluten-Free Muffin Mix
  • Gluten-Free Multi-Purpose Flour Mix

The King Arthur Flour Gluten-Free Bread Mix was so easy to make. I just added 4 Tbsp. of butter, 1 1/2 Cups of warm water and 3 Eggs. (No milk required). When I was done mixing it, I let it rise for 30 minutes. Then I stirred it and put it to a greased bread pan. Then let it rise for another 40 minutes. Then I put the bread in a preheated 350 degree oven for 20-40 minutes till it was done and that was it. I let it cool for a few minutes then I sliced it. It sliced so easy, it did not crumble or push in when I sliced it. And it sliced as thin as I wanted it to. The bread was firm, fluffy and moist. And it tasted so good. My 5 year old kept asking me for more of the bread. It does contain sugar for those of you who cannot have sugar in your diet. Definitely one of the best tasting gluten-free bread mixes I have ever tried. I give this bread and King Arthur Flour 5 stars out of 5.

The King Arthur Flour Pancake Mix was very to make as well. It requires 2 eggs, 6 Tbsp. of butter and 2 cups of milk(I used rice milk). I added a couple bananas to the recipe, since banana pancakes are my very favorite. I scooped the batter on a preheated 350 degree griddle then cooked for a couple of minutes on each side and they were done. These pancakes are the best gluten-free pancakes I have ever tasted and my family really liked them too. They taste and look like real pancakes. The pancakes are light, fluffy and moist. It does contain sugar for those of you on a sugar-free diet. I give these pancakes and King Arthur Flour 5 stars out of 5. I highly recommend King Arthur Flour products.

Check out The King Arthur Gluten-Free Mixes on their website. On their website they have a list of gluten-free recipes. The mixes are all available on their website, and in supermarkets nationwide. Hosting a Christmas party can be fun and exciting. Make your party a memorable one by doing these simple ways: set a date; set a budget and figure out the number of guests; send out invitations; plan your menu; decorate your party venue; choose your party utensils; prepare some music; and, take a lot of beautiful photos.

They say hosting a party is a tough job. But, it shouldn't be. It should make you find it as an enjoyable task. Proper planning is the key to that. Asking help from your friends and family members will make it easier for you too. Here some ways you might want to follow to make your planning and actual party a really memorable and perfect one:

Set a date

You have the weekends and some holidays in December to host a party. Yet, it is helpful to set the date and send invitations as early as November. For sure, your guests might be having other parties at this time of the year. So, you need to plan and inform them ahead of time to prevent any conflicts with your guests' schedules.

Set a budget and figure out the number of guests

Make a decision on the amount of money you can afford to spend for your party. A small budget is not a problem. It is a matter of setting priorities and allocating your funds properly. You can have the party at your place or perhaps look for a restaurant that provides for a function room to accommodate your guests. Choose the one that costs you less. The number of guests to be invited is one important factor in determining your party budget.

Send out invitations

Sending out invitation cards should be done at least three weeks before the party. You can buy invitation cards online or buy them from your nearest store. You also have an option of making your own invitation cards to add some personal touch. Just make sure to use a Christmas stationery to match with the theme of the party. Choose an envelope that complements with the design of the stationery too. It is important to include in your invitation the basic details such as the date, time, and venue of the party. Indicate also your name being the host of the party. Don't forget to mention the type of party too. Whether it's a dinner buffet party, a cocktail party, or whatever you have in mind.

Plan your menu

Planning a menu is very essential in hosting a party. If you wish to have your party at your place, then choose an array of food that will be easy for you to prepare. Choose those that are easy for you to handle and to serve as well. Appetizers and desserts should compromise a wide selection for everyone to fully enjoy. Beverage of different sorts can be really enticing for everyone especially for kids. If you happen to include kids in your party invitation, then have some milk and fruit juices.

Decorate your party venue

You can decorate your party venue by using less expensive Christmas decors and lights. A Christmas tree should be one of the highlights of your party decorations. Your food table, of course, should also have the best decorations. You can have some table napkins with Christmas design prints. A table cloth accented with festive holiday prints will surely add beauty to your table.

Choose your party utensils

You can use disposable spoons, forks, plates, cups instead of the breakables. Just make sure that you choose the ones that are durable. In fact, there are several disposable utensils with Christmas designs and prints too. They will definitely add some charm to your theme.

Prepare some music

To create a joyful atmosphere and to keep the Christmas spirit in the air, you can play Christmas music in the background while everyone is having their fill of your sumptuous food.

Take a lot of beautiful photos

Make sure to capture every beautiful moment of your party. You can personally take photos or maybe ask someone to take the pictures while you entertain your guests. You can even send a photo to every guest along with your 'thank you' card.
