•3 Minute auto shutoff
•Great for allowing cooks time to prepare ingredients while also maintaining battery life

I love this food scale. It light and compact so that it does not take up allot of room in the kitchen. It is so easy to use. Gluten Free Food Fair - May 7, 2011

It is estimated that for each person diagnosed with gluten intolerance, celiac disease and dermatitis herpetiformis, 90 are undiagnosed and dealing with health consequences. The average time it takes to diagnose celiac disease from the onset of symptoms is 10 years. Having celiac disease but not being treated for it could lead to serious health problems from osteoporosis to lymphoma to stomach cancer. While other diseases may be treated with a prescription pill, celiac disease has one cure - complete avoidance of gluten, the protein found in wheat, barley, rye and contaminated oats. Gluten free foods are now more widely available, but generally at a higher cost then comparable wheat based products. Three of our local GIG branches have banded together to organize this annual food fair allowing folks to sample foods from over 25 vendors and hopefully find products they enjoy and want to buy regularly.

INFORMATION
The Gluten Free Food Fair is a family event, where one can enjoy meeting people and sampling delicious gluten free foods. There will also be a door prize drawing with an estimated 25-30 baskets of gluten free products. The GIG support groups will be distributing information about monthly meetings and other events in the area. There will be resource tables staffed by health care providers knowledgeable about gluten intolerance.

Two Tasty Gluten Free Recipes That the Whole Family Will Love

It can be a challenge coming up with fantastic recipes that aren’t just gluten-free but also delicious. Well, we’ve made the search a little easier for you. Check out the following gluten-free recipes that we’ve dug up for breakfast and lunch.

Gluten-Free Pancakes

For this recipe, you’ll need the following ingredients:

• 2 eggs

• 2 cups water
• 1 cup rice flour
• 1/3 cup potato starch
• 4 tablespoons dry buttermilk powder
• 3 tablespoons tapioca flour
• 3 tablespoons canola oil
• 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
• ½ teaspoon backing soda
• ½ teaspoon salt
• ½ teaspoon xanthan gum
• 1 packet sugar substitute

Mix the rice flour, potato starch, tapioca flour, sugar substitute, dry buttermilk powder, baking powder, salt, baking soda, and xanthan gum together in a bowl. Stir in water, eggs, and oil until well-blended. Heat a well-oiled skillet over medium-high heat and spoon the batter onto it. Cook until bubbles begin to form on the edge of the cakes. Flip and cook until golden brown. Enjoy!

Strawberry Romaine Salad

For this delicious lunch, you’ll need the following ingredients:

• 2 bunches fresh spinach (chopped)

• 1 head romaine lettuce (chopped)

• 1 pint fresh strawberries (sliced)

• 1 Bermuda onion (sliced)

• ½ cup mayonnaise

• 1/3 cup white sugar

• ¼ cup milk

• 2 tablespoons white wine vinegar

• 2 tablespoons poppy seeds

Combine the spinach, romaine, strawberries, and onion in a large salad bowl. Combine the mayonnaise, sugar, milk, vinegar, and poppy seeds in a jar with a lid. Shake the mixture well and pour over salad. Toss until the dressing is evenly distributed. Serve and get ready for the compliments!

These are just two of our favorite gluten-free recipes. Which one can you not wait to try out?

Best Exercises For Those Battling A Weight Problem

If you're someone who has more than 30 pounds to lose, chances are there are some exercises that just aren't going to feel all that comfortable for you. You do have quite a bit of excess body fat and if you're performing some of the higher intensity activities then joint pain is almost certainly to follow up soon.

Far too many people use excess weight as an excuse to stop them from stepping into the gym, which is a big shame because this is precisely what these people need. Instead, they should seek out the exercises that will make them feel more comfortable while burning off calories.

Let's have a look at the top exercise choices for those who are battling a serious weight problem.

Swimming/Aquasize
The very first exercise that should be considered is swimming or taking an aquasize class. These are perfect because they're entirely non-impact, yet will burn off hundreds of calories per session & slowly moving you closer to your ideal weight goal.

Since you will also be working against the resistance of the water during an aquasize class, not only do you see great cardiovascular benefits from this form of activity, but you'll also gain muscle strength as well. It will make your waistline smaller & your heart healthier.

Rowing
Moving on, rowing is the next activity that you must consider doing if you're going to see good results from your workout without experiencing any discomfort.

Rowing is perfect since it is a great calorie burner & unlike walking/running, there is no up and down motion, thus it won’t place any stress on the joints. It is also good for boosting the strength and muscle definition in the quad, hamstrings, shoulders, back, and bicep muscles, so it will provide a number of key benefits that will help to transform your body.

If you can add thirty minutes of rowing two or three times per week to your overall workout routine, it won't be long before you notice a huge difference in front of the mirror.

Bodyweight Exercises
Moving on, bodyweight exercises are another must-do for those who are battling a weight problem. Many of those who are quite overweight are a little tentative about the thought of lifting free weights not only because they may be uncomfortable in that area of the gym but because they are worried it will cause them to gain even more weight, & this makes bodyweight exercises a better alternative for those who are concerned with those issues mentioned above.

It is important that you incorporate strength and conditioning exercises into your workout routine because this will not only help increase your fitness and muscle strength level, but as you build up muscle mass it will help to increase the metabolism, making your body burning off body fat faster all day long.

Bodyweight training proves to be perfect in this scenario since you will find you get good resistance due to the excess body fat you're carrying and these exercises can be performed right in the comfort of your own home.

Yoga
It's going to be very important that you work on flexibility as this will help you perform other activities with more ease and help to make you feel much more comfortable as well.

Some yoga exercises are using compound movement, which in turns will burn off more calories as you work on several body parts at the same time, so this is what every person should focus on if they want to shed off that body fat fast.

So there you have the top exercises that you should consider if you are someone who is battling a weight problem and experiencing some trouble. All of these will help take your fitness to the next level and ensure you enjoy the workouts while you do them.

This is a guest post from Wozniacki. Wozniacki is the co-author of an ebook titled Ripped Cut Buff, which offers tips & workout routines on how to get ripped. What are you waiting for? Grab a copy of Ripped Cut Buff now & see the changes in 8 weeks without pushing through the pain!"

This week I will share with you: Gluten Free Drugs

Be sure and check out my current giveaways located on my right side bar. Have a great week.

Gluten Free Drugs

Make sure your medications are gluten free.

There are no labeling requirements in medications. Very few medications contain gluten, but some do contain gluten. The source of the ingredients in your medication has to be verified. Brand name medications and generic medications may have different inactive ingredients and could contain gluten.

Either brand name medications or generic medications are acceptable as long as the ingredients have been checked to ensure that they are gluten free. Ask your pharmacist to check what the ingredients are in your medications. The medications ingredients should be checked for gluten when it is refilled and if the drug company manufacturer changes. Doctors and and pharmacists are not always alert to the risks that gluten in medications poses to a person who has celiac disease.

Here is a flyer you can give to your pharmacist. http://www.ashp.org/s_ashp/docs/files/PS_Celiac_Flyer.pdf

You can also check out the website of the brand name of your medications for a list of ingredients. You could e-mail them or call them to find out if your medications contain gluten.

If the source of the following ingredients are not specified ask your pharmacist to call the manufacturer.
  • Starch, Modified Starch
  • Pregelatinzed Starch, Pregelatinized modified starch
  • Dextrates, Dextrin
  • Dextrimaltose, Carmel coloring
Drug companies use gluten to thicken medications and to make them taste better. Some over the counter and prescription medication labels use words like starch or flavor, it may contain gluten in them.

If a medication does have gluten in it you may ask your pharmacist or doctor to have them give you a medication that is gluten free.

March is National Autoimmune Diseases Awareness Month

This month I have have partnered up with The American Autoimmune Related Diseases Association to help spread awareness about Autoimmune Diseases, you can too. For those of you who may know or not know that having Gluten Intolerance and Celiac Disease is an autoimmune disease. List of Autoimmune Diseases

American's, please take notice of the 50 million of our friends, family and co-works who suffer everyday with one or more of the 100 plus autoimmune diseases. This affects more American's than cancer and is one of the top killers of women under 64 years of age. This month the AARDA is launching an awareness campaign called, "We are 50 Million".

The campaign spotlights autoimmune patients stories from around the country. Patients are asked the question, " How many of the 50 million does your family represent?"

The answers to this question highlight some important facts about autoimmune diseases, that we as American's should be aware of.

1. 50 million Americans have an autoimmune disease comprising a major U.S. health crisis.
2. There are 100 plus autoimmune diseases, celiac as we know being one of them. Other diseases include: lupus, Crohn’s disease, Addison’s disease, vasculitis, vitiligo, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and ulcerative colitis.
3. Autoimmune diseases tend to “cluster” in families, for example, if your grandmother had rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or lupus, you could be at greater risk for developing an autoimmune disease.
4. Less than 13 percent of American’s can name an autoimmune disease and yet it ranks as deadly as Cancer and Heart Disease.
5. Autoimmune diseases target women 75 percent more often than men and they are one of the top ten killers of women under the age of 64.

The Skin Health Benefits of Taking Vitamin E

Vitamin E, like alpha-tocopherol type, can help avoid wrinkles. It acts as an antioxidant which fights toxic substances found in skin tissues.

You can apply Vitamin E oil on your skin, take capsule supplements, or eat foods rich in Vitamin E to realize the potential health benefits of Vitamin E on your skin.

As you age wrinkles are unsightly and unavoidable. You can avoid wrinkles and enjoy younger-looking skin, with Vitamin E. Here is a short explanation on how Vitamin E helps prevent wrinkles:

Contains antioxidants

Preventing premature wrinkles is easy because of the antioxidant properties in alpha-tocopheryl Vitamin E. Antioxidants fight for your body and neutralize radicals in your body. These free radicals are unbalanced and unstable molecules which may lead to the breakdown of body tissues, including the collagen on the dermis of your skin. A small quantity of free radicals is not harmful, but as you age, these free radicals also grow in number. They enhance with prolonged exposure to sunlight as well. With vitamin E, these free radicals can be neutralized, thus protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful radiation and preventing the wrinkles that appear with age.

Take advantage of the Vitamin E benefits, with a choice of rubbing your skin with Vitamin E oil, swallowing a capsule, or eating foods loaded with Vitamin E.

Oil from Vitamin E

Vitamin E oil is prevalent in most of the pharmacies and is affordable. You can apply the oil directly to the wrinkled part of your face, particularly around your mouth and on the forehead. To facilitate absorption, apply Vitamin E oil to hands and feet and cover them with cotton gloves and socks. You can apply the oil once or twice a week before going to bed for the best results. The oil is quite thick and sticky, but you can reduce its thickness by warming it a bit. Argan oil is another suitable oil that is rich in Vitamin E that you can use as a substitute. Argan oil benefits are numerous and are not only limited to preventing wrinkles and keeping your skin protected from sun exposure. You can also combine the oil with other skin-rejuvenating oils, such as peppermint oil, olive oil, and jojoba oil to make a relaxing and wrinkle-reducing bath.

Vitamin E in capsule form

You may consume a vitamin E supplement in capsule form as well. For effectiveness this must be work with other nutrient and therefore be taken with meals. Iron prevents the absorption of Vitamin E, hence avoid iron when you have these supplements. So when taking tocopherol and/or tocotrienol vitamin E supplements, take them with a meal or with fatty acid capsules like fish oil (EPA-DHA). When selecting a vitamin E supplement, you choose one which contains other tocopherols and tocotrienols, not just alpha-tocopherol. Check with your physician to ascertain the correct dosage so that you do not develop any side effects from taking too much.

Foods rich in Vitamin E

Probably the best way to get Vitamin E is to consume foods rich in Vitamin E. Included in this category are dark and leafy veggies, broccoli, nuts, olives, legumes, whole grains, milk, eggs, and meat from organs. To stay healthy and beautiful through and through, enjoy these foods that are filled with nutrients (especially Vitamin E).

The routes of administration of Vitamin E are parenteral route, oral tablets or powders to be ingested mixed with juices, water or gels. Too much Vitamin E can cause internal damage so know the limit of how much you can ingest on a daily basis. When anticipating using Vitamin E pills, ensure that you check with a physician for the correct amount to take.
