The Pillars of Health and Fitness

Working Together Teamwork Puzzle ConceptWhen someone says 'are you fit?' this can be a very ambiguous term. Of course the answer might depend on the context - they might be asking if you are fit to do something in particular. In such cases the answer will be easy, and most of us know whether we are fit to run a race or partake in sports. However for the most part the question is far more open and means instead are you 'generally' fit. Answering this can be more difficult.

All of us would like to be fit and healthy, but this can be hard to achieve if we can't even define it. What then does it actually mean to be fit and healthy? Here we will examine some of the things that make someone fit or not so fit.

CV Fitness

CV fitness means that you are capable of exerting yourself for long periods of time without getting tired and without having some kind of asthma attack or heart complaint. If you have good cardio fitness you will be able to go running for long periods of time, and to climb flights of stairs deftly without bending over panting when you reach the top. This is probably what the vast majority of people mean when they say 'fit'.

To be fit in this regard, you need to be a good weight for your size, and you need to work to improve your VO2 max and heart by going for jogs, rowing, cycle etc, or engaging in sports.

Strength

Strength also comes into health and fitness. Someone fit generally is not going to be wiry and is not going to look as though they'd fall apart if you flicked them. In order to be fit you will likely to some form of resistance training which might mean calisthenics or using weights. For women this means achieving a basically toned body, while for men it often means more impressive biceps and pecs.

Health

Change of HeartThis is an equally ambiguous word, but in general being healthy means being free of disease and injury. If you are currently limping because of a bad ankle, then in most people's books you are not going to be considered fit and healthy. To maintain your general health you need to ensure that you are getting enough sleep and that you are eating lots of vitamins and minerals which will help you to develop a strong immune system. You also need to prioritize rest and recovery time in the face of injury to get yourself back to full health as quickly as possible.

Flexibility

Being flexible might not be as crucial as having a strong cardiovascular system, but it is nevertheless one of the 'pillars' of fitness and falls into that category. If you work on flexibility then you can help yourself to avoid injury, and can at the same time improve your range of movement. Simply stretching and warming up before training will help you to develop and sustain flexibility.

Getting the Motivation to Use Your Elliptical Machines

So you did your research and read up on 2012 elliptical trainers. You learned with elliptical trainers were the best ones and you learned how to use them to burn fat, built muscle and generally transform your appearance and your fitness for the better. You did all that, but then you bought the trainer you wanted and found that you couldn't bring yourself to use it as regularly as you need to. The problem then is, that no matter how much you spent or how well you chose your device – unless you actually use them, even 2012 elliptical trainers aren't going to be enough to get you into shape.

The problem is no doubt motivation and you probably find yourself talking yourself down from working out when you know you should. No doubt you wake up in the morning and you think about all the ways in which you are running late and how cozy bed is, or you get home from work and feel tired and stress and maybe even ill and believe you 'deserve' a night off to relax in front of the TV. Perhaps you do, but ultimately if your 2012 elliptical trainers just sit there then you've wasted money and you're not getting into shape. How do you find that motivation?

Well first of all you need to make sure that you think about working out in the right way. When we feel tired or ill then we feel like our body wants us to relax and as though exerting ourselves would do us harm. Quite the opposite is normally true however unless you are ill, because exercise is good for the body. Thus by using 2012 elliptical trainers we are able to increase our energy and get our blood pumping again kick starting our body to feel fresher and healthier – and we'll get more out of the evening as a result as well.

If you find yourself not being able to face a workout then you will make lots of excuses such as 'I'm too tired' or 'I just had a very hard day'. Recognize then this – there is no such thing as a good excuse. Any excuse you give is a hollow one because you can always benefit from a workout and because you can always fit in at least ten minutes. Unless you're sick, you shouldn't let yourself off in any instance. Nor should you try to put the workout off until tomorrow – because it just quite simply won't get done. Being strict and sticking at it is the only way to see positive changes.

The solution to this feeling then is to challenge yourself to do just a ten minute workout. Sure you might not have time, or the energy, to do 60 minutes as you intended – but recognize that something is always better than nothing. In other words even if you only do a five minutes then that's not a waste o time and it will help your body to kick start itself. The good news is though, that after doing five minutes you will normally find yourself getting carried away and training much longer.

3 Tips on Making a Workout Out of Everything You Do - Without Working Out

As we go through the hustle and bustle of everyday life, our finances often tend to supersede our personal health and well being. This inevitably equates to standing on the scale one day dumbfounded by how you have gained 20, 30 or more pounds over the last couple of years. It can be a painful moment, often experienced in private.

Improving out health is a great part of self improvement. Fortunately there are a few exercise techniques you can use on a daily basis that will help you burn energy or calories if you are a person who counts them without having to pay for a gym membership.

These exercises can be categorized by movement or environment whichever may be most fitting to you. For some people, just the thought of a new workout routine or activity evolves itself into a huge psychological barrier that ends up getting put off until the next day, or week or month and so on. Therefore it may be helpful to look at the following not so much as a “workout” so to speak, but moreover as a new series of movements worth trying in the process of everyday life. With the goal being to make a workout out of everything you do over time.

On The Job Healthy Movements

Understandably, performing the “downward dog” while reaching under your desk to restock paper may not be the most kosher activity for the workplace. But there are other stretches; tension or repetitive motions you can do throughout the work day that really help improve your health.

  • Get On Your Horse - In martial arts, there is a stance called the “High Horse.” What this consists of is standing straight with your feet positioned in a slightly wider stance than normal just outside the shoulders width, and bending your knees slightly. If you work at a desk, or counter you can stand in this position and burn energy. Martial artists sometimes hold this position for hours. It strengthens your legs and leaves your upper body free to move as needed.

  • Sit With Stability - Use a stability ball at your desk instead of a chair. Stability balls work a variety of lower body muscles, and force your body to posture itself appropriately. Some companies actually provide stability balls for their workers to use while at their desks or doing computer repair work (for example).

  • Brisk To The Burn - If you have short distances to travel throughout the day, a good technique is to walk briskly between each location. For example, a friend of my works at one of the big box stores with a huge floor. She frequently has the opportunity to walk briskly back and forth from one end of the store to another while performing her daily duties. Walking briskly until you feel a slight burn in your calves or shins can be benefiting towards your health a great deal.

Household Workouts

For the most part we all have to do some sort of household chores on a daily basis. We can dread them a great deal or look at them as healthy little workouts with a little creative thinking.

  • Canoe Sweep - Even if you are not from Hawaii or ambidextrous this method of sweeping will help you increase your hand eye coordination. Rather than sweeping around the house or driveway with your normal technique, try turning your body a little sideways as if you were paddling a canoe. Alternating sides between ten or twenty sweep repetitions as if you were paddling a canoe and you will notice the benefits almost instantly. Before you know it your area will be swept, and you will have more positive perspective of house cleaning.

  • Wax On Wax Off - Again, the benefits of using both hands when wiping are true as displayed in the famous movie. Whether wiping the walls, tables or the floor try alternating hands and using similar motions.

  • Baby Weights - If you have children they may enjoy this one more than you will at first. Have your little one lay on your back and do bended knee push-ups. Or have them hold on to your calves and lift your legs holding them suspended from a chair or couch. You can turn this into a fun little play time for the two (or three) of you and you can enjoy the physical benefits of it as well.

Healing Breaths on Daily Commutes

If you are familiar with Yoga, then you may have heard of term “Healing Breath.” This is easy to do during your commute to or from work. Time your breaths in 3 to 5 second intervals, balancing your length of inhale with your length of exhale. I would advise that you start while at home or in small increments if you have not done it before, less you find yourself light headed.

Eventually you will be able to work your way up to ten or twenty second inhales and exhales. These deep healing breaths oxygenate your blood and have a wealth of health and self improvement benefits. The human body has numerous self healing mechanisms in place, all of which are fueled by oxygen. It is not that often that we open up and expand our lungs, taking a deep breath is a great place to start.

Finding the Balance for Personal Improvement

Whatever method you choose to improve yourself with, there is a unique balance between mind and body. When the body feels good, the mind tends to follow and vice verse. I like the phrase “Motion creates emotion,” because it manifests one of the most important elements of personal well being… taking action.

A small insignificant thing like trying a new sweeping technique or taking deep breaths can have an enormous affect upon your person growth. As the proverbial “a journey of a thousand miles begins with only one step,” make today your day to begin, let your action begin with one breath. Then tomorrow add one step and so on. Until eventually you will find yourself standing at the scale again with a smile of confidence, knowing you have found the balance that works best for you regardless of what the scales may say.

How To Get Rid Of Brown Spots On Your Face Naturally

Although harmless, that brown spot on your face may be unattractive. Even worse, it can make you feel older than you really are. There are cosmetic treatments for this problem such as laser and micro dermabrasion. However, these can be very expensive. If you don't have the budget for these treatments, fret not. There are certain home remedies which can aid in winning back your youthful appearance.

Also called age spots, making them less visible may be done by applying some things found in or around the home. Some of them may be in the medicine cabinet, refrigerator or even your garden. Continue reading if you're sick and tired of these unsightly marks that won't seem to go away.

Citrus fruits like orange, lemon and grapefruit are naturally acidic. However, they're light enough to be applied on most skin types and produce dramatic results. Their acidic property can help bleach those clumps of melanin. Using cotton buds, apply the juice of any citrus fruit found in your kitchen on the affected area and leave it there, preferably as you sleep.

Another effective yet mild bleaching agent is lactic acid, and buttermilk has it. If you find that citrus fruit juice makes your skin sting, then switch to buttermilk instead. It's gentler especially on sensitive skin types. Again, use cotton buds to daub it onto those discolorations and allow to it stay overnight.

See if you got vitamin E supplement inside your medicine cabinet. Using a clean needle, prick a capsule and directly apply the oil inside on your problem spots. It's also okay to apply the oil all over the face because it's a moisturizer that's rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants are effective against delaying and even reversing the signs of aging on the skin because they can neutralize free radicals effectively.

Another natural remedy for age spots is aloe vera. Check out your garden if you have this plant. The gel inside the leaves has to be smeared on the discoloration. This gel is also loaded with antioxidants. It's also used by many cultures in treating several different skin problems.

Aside from trying out these home remedies for ridding that brown spot on your face, you should do your share and protect yourself from too much sun exposure. Apply sun block that's formulated for your skin type. When stepping foot outside, use a pair of large sunglasses, wide-brimmed hat and an umbrella.

Pain Management Methods

When people experience any kind of pain the most obvious and common solution is using painkiller drugs. We are all used to these medications because they are effective and quite convenient to use. Modern day painkillers are much better than older drugs that were plagued with many side effects. Still, sometimes even the most sophisticated and safe to use medications can cause negative symptoms or aggravate other health conditions simply because there's no such thing as a perfectly safe painkiller drug. And if you happen to suffer from such an issue, there are some alternative pain management options that can be as effective as common oral pills. Make sure to try the following if your painkiller drug doesn't deliver the effects you need:

Heat and cold

This type of therapy is probably the easiest and most common in case of an injury. In fact it can be safer and more effective than some painkillers. All you need is a towel moistened with hot water held against the affected area for about 10-15 minutes. Just make sure to not cause a burn. Heat will intensify the blood circulation in the area and reduce inflammation. Cold on the other hand can numb the nerves in the area, so you can use it as an alternative. Warp a couple of ice cubes with a towel and hold against the area. This is the perfect drug-free first aid in case of trauma and acute pain associated with it.

Physical therapy

Physical therapy is another pain management option that will suit those who suffer more serious forms of trauma or joint conditions. With physical therapy a specialists manipulates the muscles in the affected area in a way to promote faster recovery and prevent the muscles from deforming due to inflammation. Physical therapy can be particularly helpful in chronic pain conditions causes by injury or joint issues but it can also relieve acute pain to a degree right after the trauma. But it may take a couple of sessions and won't work as fast as Ultram.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese practice that was known for centuries in China and has recently become quite popular in the US. Under this practice the body is covered with small thin needles that are applied to special spots that are believed to control the flow of vital energy in the body. Although the assumption may turn down the most skeptical people, numerous clinical studies have shown that acupuncture can actually reduce painful sensations with many chronic pain conditions like arthritis withing a couple of sessions. So it really makes sense to visit an acupuncture office if you need chronic pain relief. Just make sure that the specialist is a certified professional who knows what to do.

Electromagnetic therapy

Electric and magnetic therapy are used separately but address the same mechanisms in the body. Both these methods intensify the blood circulation in the area of application, which helps reduce inflammation and reduce the sensitivity of nerves that ultimately leads to pain relief. Whether achieved through application of low power electric current or magnetic field, this method is particularly useful in cases of joint pain and injuries. Of course, it may take a longer time to take effect if compared to drugs like Ultram. But on the other hand there are little side effects with this type of pain management.
